The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta Salami, said that the humanitarian community in Sudan is calling for urgent resources and unhindered humanitarian access following confirmed famine outbreaks in parts of North Darfur State.
In a statement issued by her office on Friday, commenting on the report of the Famine Review Committee of the Integrated Interim Classification for Food Security regarding the situation in Sudan, Salami said that the United Nations and its partners in Sudan were informed of the report’s findings, “which reflect the seriousness of the humanitarian situation on the ground.”
“The people of Sudan have suffered continuously since the outbreak of the conflict more than 15 months ago,” she stressed, adding that this is a man-made crisis that can be resolved if all parties and stakeholders adhere to their responsibilities and obligations towards the population in dire need.
She drew attention to the fact that the humanitarian community in Sudan had been sounding the alarm about the unfolding hunger catastrophe and the threat of famine while the conflict continued, causing displacement, disrupting basic services, destroying livelihoods and severely restricting .humanitarian access
The report of the Famine Review Committee of the Integrated Interim Classification for Food Security showed that the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces severely hampered the arrival of humanitarian aid and pushed the Zamzam camp for displaced persons in North Darfur state into the clutches of famine.
The statement indicated that people in Sudan are likely to face similar conditions in the 13 areas at risk of famine that were included in the Integrated Interim Classification of Food Security report issued in June 2024.
