World Central Kitchen (WCK) is a non-governmental organization founded in 2010 by Spanish-American chef José Andrés, aiming to provide meals to communities affected by natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
WCK’s Activities in Gaza:
Following the escalation of conflict in the Gaza Strip in 2023, WCK expanded its operations to meet the increasing food needs of the affected population. The organization established four large-capacity field kitchens in southern and central Gaza and supported a network of Palestinian-led community kitchens. Through these efforts, over 75 million meals were distributed to affected families in Gaza.
Challenges and Notable Events:
On April 1, 2024, a WCK convoy was attacked by Israeli drones in Deir al-Balah, resulting in the deaths of seven aid workers. This incident led to a temporary suspension of the organization’s operations in Gaza. However, WCK later resumed its operations, reaffirming its commitment to providing food assistance to those in need in the region.
